Casper test
Autonomy support………………
1.Evidence-based practice:
Practicing professionals are expected to make decisions and provide care and expertise based on scientific evidence rather than gut feeling or personal opinions. In the absence of scientific evidence, the best source of information is experience accumulated in the profession such as case studies. Therefore, whether you are a medical doctor, a teacher, a dentist or a speech therapist, your decisions must be based on sound evidence. Note that this is another part of your fact gathering procedure in complex problems with many unknowns and can be applied to every day scenarios. This is indeed the point. Remember that CASPER does not test your knowledge of any specific profession, that’s something you learn when you get accepted. However, the test wants to find out whether you understand these concepts and can successfully apply them to your everyday life before they even consider you as future professional. Therefore, when you communicate your CASPER responses you have to take care to explicitly let the raters know that you are making a certain decision based on evidence.

2.Non-Judgmental approach: Now, this category is a very special one, because as you recall from our BeMo formula, we talked about how you need to approach all scenarios from a non-judgmental approach so that you do not jump to any hasty conclusions or take any extreme positions. All scenarios somehow fall under this category, since you should always approach any scenario non-judgmentally and objectively. Here’s an exercise for you to see this in real time. Think about the last 2 important decisions you had to make quickly about a situation or a person. Did you gather all the facts first or did you jump to a conclusion right away? How was your action influenced by your initial rash judgment?
You are at a restaurant with your grandmother and grandfather for Sunday lunch. Your grandfather seems to be a bit confused and is acting a little strangely.
Your grandmother tells you that based on some preliminary screening tests, his doctor suspects that he has dementia.Later, the conversation turns to what everyone will be doing later this afternoon, your grandmother tells you that your grandfather will be running some errands for her, including going to pick up some groceries.
Your grandmother then mentions that he has had to run most of their errands lately, because she has been having trouble with more physical chores due to her sorehip and “breathing troubles”. She insists, however, that he only drives around their small town, which they have lived in for 35 years, and is always careful to avoid rush hour and drive slowly.
What would you say to your grandparents?
in this situation,my main concern would be the well-being of my grandparents as well as that of society at large(problem / values identification ).
first, I would what to get more information about my grandfather’s diagnosis and whether his can drive later by himself.
once we had this conversation privately, I will know his condition is mild or worse,
however even mild I also ask them if I could help them with their errands today.
if my grandparents lose his driver license, I would know other resources are available to my grandparents. Such as could I help them? Is public transit or food delivery?
Then I will make appointment with doctor to ask more questions about my grandpa’s diagnosis, then I can involved and lend them a hand find other resources in the future,
if his diagnosis was more serve, and he was not cleared for driving, I would be more concerned about him potentially placing himself and others risk should be continue driving.
I would express my concerns in a non-confrontational way and offer to take them to get groceries after lunch.
I would also talk to them and find out what kind of resources are available to them within the community to help them get their groceries and other chores done. I might offer my services or help from another family member who I know is available, or suggest to them that for safety, my grandmother drives, while my grandfather goes in for groceries.(solutions, if/then) By talking to my grandparents, finding out the severity of the diagnosis and whether my grandfather’s driving has been assessed, I would be able to ensure their safety as well as that of society in general in this situation.(summary)
DISCUSSION: In this scenario, the main issue is the potential risk that your grandfather could be posing to himself, as well as society, by driving. Your main aim as you work through the question is to figure out how to quantify that risk, and then work through solutions based on the various risk levels that you have identified. In the “BAD” answer, the individual appears to either not recognize the risk or does not want to get involved. Both are potentially red flags from the raters’ point of view. The applicant takes a judgmental approach and assumes safety, thus neglecting potential risks. The “GOOD”answer shows someone who is willing to have an open discussion with their grandparents to ascertain the actual risk involved in the situation. They demonstrate that they have considered the potential for evolving risk in this situation by discussing how they will address the present risk,as well as the actions that they will take to mitigate risk in the future. They also demonstrate the ability to approach the problem from multipleangles, by discussing various ways in which they would try to help their grandparents to address this problem.
